Footprints Waipoua

November 22, 2015

We took the twilight encounter with Meripae in November. I use a power wheelchair and there was some question as to if my wheelchair would get through the terrain. There was some rain early in the afternoon, so Meripae called our hotel room to give us an "out". I have a pretty touch power chair so decided to go forward with the encounter.

It was such a magical experience! There are many other reviews that talk about the experience. It was everything you could imagine and more.

If you use a power wheelchair, most of the experience was easy. There are many elevated boardwalks, though when the boardwalks come to an end, you may slide somewhat. It is slightly slick, even though they have done everything to try to prevent that: Chicken wire was attached to increase traction for everyone. Where there is no boardwalk, the terrain is bumpy. Guests in power chairs should just take it easy. Enjoy the scenery as there is no rush.

The power wheelchair I use is a Quantum 6000Z, so it is hefty. Lighter chairs likely will have issues, though each guest knows the power and capabilities of their own chair. If you think you can do it, be sure. I'd hate for anyone to get stuck in the forest.
